Buymed Invests $1 Million in QR Traceability System to Combat Counterfeit Drugs

Counterfeit drugs are one of the biggest threats to public health in Southeast Asia. These products often look legitimate—with professional packaging and barcodes—but their details can't be verified. To address this, Buymed has launched a dynamic QR traceability system for pharmaceuticals across its B2B operations in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand.

Turning QR Codes into a First Line of Defense

Since 2018, Buymed has invested $1 million in building a pharmaceutical traceability system centered on dynamic QR technology. Today, that system covers 100% of our distributed product portfolio.

With a single scan, healthcare professionals can instantly verify:

  • Product origin and manufacturer

  • Batch number and expiry date

  • Active ingredients, indications, and usage guidance

  • Product visuals for authentication

All data is verified, synced from trusted suppliers, and managed via Buymed's internal infrastructure—ensuring consistency, accuracy, and transparency at scale.

Meeting the Moment: Policy and Market Readiness

On May 6, 2025, Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long emphasized the need for electronic labeling in the pharmaceutical industry. Proposed updates to the Law on Product and Goods Quality reflect a growing urgency to protect consumers from counterfeit and substandard products.

Buymed's QR system is designed to meet this regulatory momentum head-on—and help set a new industry benchmark in the region. Globally, QR-based traceability is already a proven model. We're helping make it the default across Southeast Asia.

Building Trust Where It's Needed Most

In thousands of pharmacies—especially in smaller or remote areas—access to verification tools can be limited. By integrating authentication directly into the product itself, Buymed makes trust scalable and immediate. Users can also cross-reference scanned data with the Drug Administration of Vietnam (DAV) portal for added validation. For pharmacists, that's peace of mind. For patients, it's safety they can see.

More Than Compliance—This Is Market Leadership

The QR traceability system reflects Buymed's broader commitment to modernizing the pharmaceutical supply chain. In an industry where speed, trust, and safety must go hand in hand, this initiative shows what responsible innovation looks like.
